Top Tech Hub Nigeria University


What makes a tech hub?

Roland Tritsch, VP of Global Engineering at Nitro, outlines what it takes in this day and age, for a city to make it as a tech hub.
‘Tech hub’ is a term we hear bandied about often but how is it actually defined? I’d be inclined to describe a tech hub as a type of ‘utopia’ where things happen faster, people are smarter and meeting investors is easier - as a result, a space is created where ideas germinate and companies prosper. However, fostering the perfect blend of skills, education and community can be easier said than done.

Founded in 1990, Lautech was named after former premier of western region, Chief Ladoke Akintola, and it is jointly owned by the Oyo and Osun state government.
With an enrollment range of between 20,000 and 24,999 students, Lautech runs pre-degree science programme, undergraduate programme and post graduate programmes. It has two campuses; the Osogbo campus and the Ogbomoso campus.
The university is affiliated to some organizations and universities abroad such as Dalarna university, Sweden, International Islamic university, Malaysia, Oracle academy, Japan OCW consortium, and Thailand cyber university.
2 Yaba College of Technology:
Yaba College of Technology, popularly known as YABATECH, was founded in 1947,and is Nigeria's first higher educational institution. It is located in Yaba, Lagos. It has a student enrollment of over 16,000.
3 Obafemi Awolowo University:
Established in 1962, Obafemi Awolowo University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the the suburban setting of the large town of Ile-Ife (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants), Osun.
Officially accredited/recognized by the National Universities Commission, Nigeria, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is a large (enrollment range: 25,000-29,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study.
This 55 years old H.E. institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment.
OAU also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, housing, sport facilities and/or activities, financial aids and/or scholarships, online courses and distance learning opportunities, as well as administrative services.
4 University of Lagos:
Founded in 1962, University of Lagos is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the the urban setting of the metropolis of Lagos (population range of over 5,000,000 inhabitants).
  Officially accredited/recognized by the National Universities Commission, Nigeria, University of Lagos (UNILAG) is a very large (enrollment range: 35,000-39,999 students) coeducational higher education institution.
University of Lagos (UNILAG) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 55 years old H.E. institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations. International students are welcome to apply for enrollment.
UNILAG also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, housing, sport facilities and/or activities, financial aids and/or scholarships, study abroad and exchange programs, online courses and distance learning opportunities, as well as administrative services.
5 Ahmadu Bello University

Established in 1962, Ahmadu Bello University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the the urban setting of the large city of Zaria (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants), Kaduna.
Officially accredited/recognized by the National Universities Commission, Nigeria, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) is a large (enrollment range: 25,000-29,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study.
This 55 years old H.E. institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students' past academic record and grades. The admission rate range is 90-100% making this Nigerian higher education organization a least selective institution. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment. ABU also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, housing, sport facilities and/or activities, financial aids and/or scholarships, study abroad and exchange programs, as well as administrative services.
6 Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA)
General Ranking: Nigeria (17) Global (7054)
The university which was created in 1981 by former president Shehu Shagari has risen to be one of the best universities of science and technology in Nigeria. Its degree program runs for five years except for architecture which is 6 years.
Today, the university runs academic disciplines and research across seven different schools and has over forty academic departments.
7 Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi (ABTU)
General Ranking: Nigeria (27) Global (7990)
Established in 1980, this university of technology is located in Bauchi, northern Nigeria. It has grown to be one of the foremost universities of technology in Nigeria.
Formerly part of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the ATBU now provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students at various levels:  bachelor’s degrees as well as Masters and Doctorate degrees.
8 Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT)
General Ranking: Nigeria (29) Global (8099)
Established in 1981 as one of the very first state Universities in Nigeria, ESUT began as ASUTECH in 1980 before later changing its name.
9 FUTO – Federal University of Technology – Owerri Imo State
The university was founded in 1980.  It later merged with Alvan Ikoku College of Education Owerri, absorbing the latter’s students.
The university is one of the top most technological universities in western Africa. Its student encompass of people from all over west Africa and beyond. It is the only federal university of technology in the South-East of Nigeria and one of the oldest in West Africa.
The University is known for its technically strong graduates, evidenced by the large number its alumni currently in oil and gas companies in Nigeria. The largest percentage of engineers in most oil companies in Nigeria are FUTO alumni.
10 Covenant University
Established in 2002, Covenant University is a non-profit private higher education institution located in the the suburban setting of the large town of Ota (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants), Ogun. Officially accredited/recognized by the National Universities Commission, Nigeria, Covenant University (CU) is a medium-sized (enrollment range: 6,000-6,999 students) coeducational higher education institution formally affiliated with the Christian-Pentecostal religion.
Covenant University (CU) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 14 years old H.E. institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations. The admission rate range is 40-50% making this Nigerian higher education organization a averagely selective institution.
International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment. CU also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, housing, sport facilities and/or activities, study abroad and exchange programs, as well as administrative services.
